10 July 2018 -- For the 2nd year in a row I have attended the New Zealand Hotel Industry Conference which is held at the Cordis Hotel in Auckland.  This year was a sell out conference with over 650 delegates from the Hotel industry attending.  Sally Atkins, Hotel Sector Manager from Tourism Industry Aotearoa who is a huge supporter of young people joining the vibrant hotel industry arranged for 5 of our students to assist with the running of events.  The students assisted with meeting and greeting the delegates, checking in of the delegates, and assisting with general enquiries.

When I spoke to Emma and Jordan two of the students your part of the team, they were absolutely thrilled to be part of this great event.  Both students are currently completing the Hotel and Hospitality Management Diploma aspire to work in the hotel industry.  Emma sees herself working in guest services and Jordan would love to work in the banqueting department of a 5 star hotel.   Mihi another student said that everything that she experience on the day had consolidated what she had learnt in the classroom.  Mihi enjoyed the networking opportunity and her pockets were full of business cards, from the GM of the FourPoints Sheraton to the Revenue Manager of Event Hospitality & Entertainment.

These are exciting times for the hotel industry in New Zealand, in fact worldwide, with a number of hotels coming online.  With the large number of hotels coming online in particular in Auckland, there was a strong theme at the conference around staffing.  How to attract staff into the industry, how to get the staff to stay and how to get the staff to grow within the hotel industry.  Leanne Harwood,  Managing Director Australasia & Japan, InterContintental Hotels Group mentioned Emma and Jordan in the Hotel Leader’s Panel suggesting that they should aim higher, she said they should be aiming for her role!  During the leadership panel great insight was shared around these issues.

New Zealand School of Tourism sponsored the Front Office Services Employee of the Year award.  Well done to Neil Hemraj, Front Office manager at the CityLife Hotel in Auckland, such a deserving recipient.
