Name: Ashleigh Howell

Programme: Diploma in Tourism & Travel Management

You were recently awarded the Te Pia Tāpoi scholarship by Ngāi Tahu Tourism, how did this come about?

Since I was 14 years of age, I have worked while going to school, and always in customer focused roles. I had a sales role at Palmers Garden World, events coordination at Summerset Retirement Village, barista work at New World Pioneer Highway and checkout operation and front of house work at The Co-Op Bar and Restaurant.  I’ve always enjoyed working in a variety of roles, helping less fortunate children with homework and afterschool mentoring.

From those experiences I became interested in resort and hotel management, and adventure tourism.  I was so happy when I found out I got this scholarship. I’m so thankful for this opportunity to learn more about tourism and with Ngāi Tahu Tourism owning and operating some of the most iconic experiences in Aotearoa, I’m keen to be involved.

This scholarship was open to Ngāi Tahu students and includes study fee support, paid holiday work and opportunities to grow cultural skills and learn more about Ngāi Tahu. It’s one of many initiatives Ngāi Tahu offers to help its young people complete tertiary study and develop into careers.

How are you enjoying the Diploma at NZST?

I’m really enjoying my time studying at the Dunedin campus.  There is a great support network there, and I can see that each student is taught in the way that best suits them.  I’m really enjoying the diploma work, and the step up academically.  I also enjoy being a role model to the Level 3 and 4 students.

What have been some of the highlights so far?

There’s a few I’d like to mention.  Firstly, the study tour to Auckland where the whole class participated in the AJ hacket Bridget climb and Bungy Jump.  Secondly, for me an endorsement to work at Walt Disney World in Florida.  Finally, but most memorable was the recent TRENZ event that I was lucky enough to be able to volunteer at.  It made me realise that I had 100% chosen the right industry to work in, but I also managed to be offered a tour guiding position at Speights Brewery.

What are your next steps now?

I wish to gain as much industry knowledge and experience as possible.  I’m still setting my sights on working in conferences and events, but management and owning my own company as well eventually.
