What is your overall thought about NZST?

This is where I found my path.  Without the support and encouragement of all the trainers here at NZST, my life would be in the same vicious cycle.  So thank you New Zealand School of Tourism for giving me the opportunity to not only better myself but give me the skills and knowledge to help others find their path.

What brought you NZST?

I am the youngest of four, I have three older brothers and one incredible mum. We grew up with drugs and alcohol being very apparent in our lives. We weren’t rich, but we weren’t poor. In my teens I became very rebellious, I made a lot of bad decisions. That was the start of a strain of bad decisions that led to events that’s shaped the person that I thought I would be for the rest of my life. Lost and looking for guidance I found myself in a very vicious cycle.

What made you want to make a change?

I got to a point where I felt I was going downhill fast, and with nothing to stop me. I decided after seeing an advertisement about NZST, that’s what I wanted to do.  So I went down to enrol the next day. I remember sitting back and telling myself that I was finally going to make something of myself. But circumstances quickly changed when my mum had an accident – I had to look out for my family. So, for four years I put it off, made excuse after excuse so that I didn’t have to take responsibility for my actions or even face the consequences that I had brought on myself. I hit yet another brick wall.

What was the tipping point?

About six months before I was to officially start at NZST I remember sitting in a crowd of proud parents and family members watching my older brother graduate from University. I kept thinking to myself that if he can accomplish his goals why couldn’t I? A week later I came back to NZST and I enrolled in Level 2 Tourism and Hospitality, which was the start of my career in progress.

How did you find the campus?

My first couple of months was period of adjustment, but the trainers were all extremely supportive of me and made me feel welcomed and comfortable in the environment. I have come a long way and struggled a lot to get here. But I’m proud of what I’ve achieved.

Where are you working now, and what is your career goal?

For the past four years I have been a second in charge at a bakery factory. It was highly stressful, so I recently resigned and started my customer service journey as a bar tender. My end goal is to own my own holiday lodge/hotel – I am now one step closer to my dream.
