What were you doing before NZST?

I’m 22 years of age, and I was born in Cardiff, Wales and grew up in a small village called Taffs Well. I didn’t have a lot growing-up in the United Kingdom, due to the economic struggle a lot of areas experienced. But my parents always tried to set me on the right path and provide what they could. As time went on, despite their efforts, I did not stick to the straight and narrow, with influences of friends and the environment I was in, I made some very questionable decisions.

At 11 years old I moved to New Zealand with my parents hoping that I would start my life anew and redirect my energy in a positive manner. I was again caught up in addiction, and trouble with the law until I moved to the West Coast, away from what I believed to be my ‘friends’ in the hope of finding a sense of direction. It was four months later, and I came across the advertisement for the New Zealand School of Tourism on Facebook. I knew I needed to get some education due to the fact I’d left school when I turned 15 and had nothing to show academically, I signed up immediately.

And where are you now?

Fast forward two years later, I now have Level 2, 3, 4 and I am not far away from Level 5.  I have numerous specialist certificates, I’ve been class leader, Honorary Student speaker at graduation, chosen attendee to the Tourism Industry Aotearoa Environmental Conference and so much more. Without this college my life could have taken a very different path. Not only did NZST give me the means to land a career, but they also helped me better myself as a person, and for that I am forever grateful.

Where are you working now?  What does your role entail?

I am currently working at the 4.5 Star Rendezvous Hotel in Christchurch Central, I was employed just over a year ago and have since gained a plethora of knowledge and skills to add to my experience. Working alongside some incredibly talented individuals I was quickly appointed as the front lobby and bar supervisor. I ensure a quality experience for any guests wishing to relax in the confines of the lobby, and in some cases I would even accommodate guests who couldn’t be seated in the restaurant due to the capacity, acting as their waiter, whilst also serving those at the bar.

What is your career goal?

I have always wanted to be self-employed so my first step will be to become a Travel Consultant, corporate or otherwise, and build up my experience in that area. The ultimate goal would be to become a travel broker and begin my own business, growing into the enterprise I have dreamed about for so long. My dedication is unwavering and my willingness to learn does not falter, success is not just a dream, it’s a mindset.
