What course did you complete? When?

I completed

  • NZ Certificate in Travel Level 4 (Tourism, Hotel and Airline Operations) – completed October 2018
  • Current – Diploma of Travel, Tourism & Management, Level 5

Campus:  NZST Christchurch

Current student or Graduate? Graduate / current

How are you finding your course with NZST?

I’m really enjoying it, as I hope it will help me succeed in the flight attending and tourism industry. I am currently studying this course because it covers all the areas I’d like to be working in the future.  I have a strong passion for flight attending with an airline, while also serving excellent hospitality to guests. Another area in the tourism industry that I would like to engage is a retail agency. I have a huge passion for travelling and promoting destinations to people.

What have the courses at NZST helped you with?

Both courses that I attended at NZST have helped me understand how a hospitality business is run efficiently in a pressured environment.  Level 4 and 5 courses certainly lived up to my expectations as the trainers were informative about all the modules that were taught.

What have been some of the highlights?

Highlights for me were going on the West Coast study tour in 2018 for Level 4.  I can honestly say it was a trip of a lifetime, as the attractions and activities that we went to were breathtaking, such as visiting Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier. Personally this was a great highlight as due to global warming the two glaciers may not be here for much longer.

Have you had any work experience in the industry yet?

In April 2019, I was accepted in a lounge assistant role on a casual contract at Christchurch’s Domestic Koru Lounge with the Compass Group, that work in partnership with Air New Zealand. The role required me to look after the lounge area by attending to passengers and seeing to their requirements at a professional friendly hospitable level. This role also required me to bring out fresh cuisine for the buffet area before sharp meal service times eg. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Services).  In addition, I was also able to gain experience as a Barista. This role entailed me producing hot beverages to guests in the lounge.  In the lounge I have worked in all areas including, buffet, barista, kitchen hand and lounge. This role has taught me how to work efficiently and professionally in a pressured environment while serving guests at an excellent level.

What’s one lesson you have learnt?

One lesson that I have learnt through experience in the hospitality industry is to work efficiently and calmly in a pressured environment. This will reassure the staff around you that we are all in the same boat.
