This programme covers tourism and seven weeks on conference and events that will also involve you working for an event company in a range of roles at sporting and other events. If you are considering a career in hotels, or involved in the organising, planning and managing of conferences, events, banquets and MORE, then this course can start you on the journey.


Experience New Zealand

This New Zealand study tour could take you to places such as Rotorua, Queenstown or other tourist destination. You may see spectacular geysers and bubbling mud pools, or get to explore Te Papa, soak in a hot pool, go bungy jumping, jet boating or luging. This three day study tour is included in the cost of the course and will see you experiencing every part of the tourism industry from accommodation, and transportation through to attractions and activities.

Tourism Expo

In teams you will be putting together a tourism expo that will showcase a region of New Zealand. You will have a week to plan and set this up and present to people who will visit the expo.

Hotel and Hospitality Operations

An inside look at how hotels operate and how each of the departments work together including rooms division, food and beverage and conference and events.

New Zealand Attractions and Activities

New Zealand has so much to offer and this module covers the unique areas of tourism such as outdoor activities, walking and skiing through to cycling tours and Maori tourism.

Conventions and Incentives Industry in New Zealand

Understand the roles and functions within which the conventions and incentives industry operates, and the career structures in the conventions and incentives industry. You will also look at the contribution sponsorship plays as part of the overall success.

Rising STAR

An opportunity to use event management software that the industry use. Learn how this software is an essential part in the operational processes of running a convention, conference or event.

Cultural and Sporting Events

Festivals, cultural and sporting events have really grown in New Zealand and are attracting large numbers of people which can really impact positively on the other tourism sectors. Discover where in New Zealand the major events are being run and how event companies work with the other sectors.

Awesome Events - work experience

Our partnership with Awesome Events means students will get unpaid opportunities to work in various roles with Awesome Events who are a leading event organizer. This is an integral part of the programme and students will gain credits for this module.

Delivering Excellence in Customer Service

This module teaches you the important skills of how to deliver customer service before you complete work experience so that you are then able to apply communication and customer service skills with real customers at a major event.

Environmental Sustainability

How important is it to clients that your organisation is environmentally sustainable? Learn how environmental sustainability relates to the conventions and incentives industry and the effects a conventions and incentives industry project can have on the environment.

Leadership within teams

This module allows you to learn about leadership, and the skills needed to be a great leader. Examine the different facets of leadership and analyse your own leadership style.

Produce a budget for an event

Learn the skills in how to produce a budget for an event in tourism which is essential in the running of a good event or conference. Apply numeracy and problem solving skills to enable you to achieve the client brief.

Creating a memorable event

This module looks at all the tasks involved in managing an event such as a wedding or birthday party.


All Level 4 Certificates
  • Applicants must have either NCEA Level 3, or University Entrance, or completed a Level 3 Certificate in Tourism or Travel or have equivalent knowledge and skills.
International Students
  • All international students must be a minimum of 18 years of age on day 1 of your course (as per code of practice requirements)
  • 4 years of secondary school or equivalent work experience
  • English Language Proficiency as outlined in the International pages on this website

We want you to stay connected - Free wifi with no limits, and Free Office 365. You will be able to connect to Microsoft Office at any time, in any place, on any device. Update your CV or access your emails while enjoying a hot chocolate in a café. However you use it, we want you to stay connected.

Mentoring & Coaching

You will have your own personal mentor and coach throughout the course that meets with you every six weeks for a one-on-one meeting to discuss your goals, talk employment and ensure you are work ready.

Event Co-ordination

Use your organisational skills and creativity in planning a Campus Event from inception through to debrief and review. From using a sales pitch & presenting your idea, marketing the event on campus, working to a budget, organising logistics, co-ordinating the event through to the big day and beyond, you will relish the opportunity to experience this in reality as part of the course.

You won't be a number or get lost in a crowd at The New Zealand School of Tourism. Small classes of around 22 means tutors will know your name and want to ensure your success every step of the way. We have had students who have started on a Level 2 course and gone right through to completing a Level 5 diploma, because of the support and encouragement of the tutoring team.
