INTRODUCTION

Want to take your interest in flight attending and aviation to the next level? This premium option is designed with the aim of a career in an airline or leading to a tourism management or supervisory position.

Year 1 includes our Tourism, Airline and Flight Attending Level 4 course which will enhance your knowledge and skills not only in the tourism industry, but also focuses on what it takes to be a flight attendant. The first year also includes an exciting second half with Level 5 focused on Walt Disney World in the first three weeks and then on five top New Zealand tourism companies. Two study tours are included and students will visit Hobbiton, and Waitomo Adventures in the North Island, and Skyline Skyrides, Real Journeys and AJ Hackett Bungy in the South Island. This gives students the opportunity to meet management and learn about the operational side of these businesses.

Modules such as Human Resources, Marketing & Sales, Accounting, Luxury Tourism in New Zealand, Customer Service Strategies, and Workplace Practices give you the knowledge and skills for the future.

Year 2 will really help you to forge a leadership role in the Tourism and Travel Management industry and be responsible for the strategy and processes behind the visitor experience.  You’ll cover modules like Strategic Leadership, Environmental Sustainability and get to design a Hospitality or Tourism Business.

You’ll also have access to an optional Paid Internship for 30 Credits Or you can choose to be involved with Tourism Futures which looks at Sustainable Maori Tourism, Change Management and Analysing a Tourism Business.

COURSE CONTENT

Year 1

 

Tourism, Airline & Flight Attending Level 4

New Zealand Tourism Destinations

New Zealand has so much to offer and this module covers the unique areas of tourism such as outdoor activities, walking and skiing through to cycling tours and Maori tourism.

Tourism Expo

In teams you will be putting together a tourism expo that will showcase a region of New Zealand. You will have a week to plan and set this up and present to people who will visit the expo.

Crew Resource Management

Learn about effective teamwork, communication, situational awareness and decision making in emergency situations on board an aircraft.

Passenger Handling

This includes how to care for children and passengers with disabilities, from boarding through to communicating effectively with them on safety information.

Food and Beverage Service

This module will see you learning and demonstrating the skills of how to provide a food and beverage service onboard an aircraft.

Airline and Airport Operations and Security

Focusing on successful airlines such as Virgin Atlantic and start up airlines such as Kiwi Air, you will learn about how airlines manage risk. Airlines and airport are all very focused on security and this module covers how airlines and airports deal with the threat of terrorism and air rage.

Aircraft safety and emergency equipment

Airlines need to carry a range of safety and emergency equipment which all crew must learn how to operate. This module gives you an in-depth understanding as to the importance of this equipment.

Managing conflict onboard an aircraft

Recognise the early signs of potential threats to the safety of the passengers, aircraft and crew and be able to use procedures and strategies to deal with any conflict.

Air Accidents

Research and present on how air accidents have helped improved the way airline of today now operate. This interesting module will make you very aware of the role you play as a flight attendant in the prevention of accidents.

FLIGHT ATTENDING PRACTICALS

4 additional weeks

This additional four weeks are for those students who have shown outstanding skills in this course and want to gain a specialist qualification in flight attending. It includes a 3 day practical in our Auckland Airport campus where our 747 service trainer and 737 cabin trainer are situated.

Wet Water Drills

Learn and understand about the equipment carried onboard an aircraft in case of a water landing. Part of this module takes place in a swimming pool and also involves a life raft and the equipment in the raft used for survival.

Handling Emergencies and Fire Fighting

This practical module prepares you for the type of emergency you may face onboard an aircraft, including fire onboard.

First Aid and Aviation Medicine

This course will see you gain a first aid certificate and have knowledge and skills you can use should a medical emergency happen on board an aircraft.

Responsible Serving of Alcohol

This online course is essential if you are wanting to fly with Virgin Australia or Jetstar, who both as require this certificate should you wish to fly for them.

Auckland Sim Experience

This 3 day trip is included in the cost of your course and gives you the hands on experience of opening and closing a real aircraft door and overwing exit. You will evacuate down a slide, use a PA system, and complete a simulated fire exercise.

Wings Exam

This exam allows you the opportunity to earn your wings by completing an exam on essential skills and knowledge of a flight attendant.

Diploma in Tourism & Travel Level 5

Walt Disney World

The inclusion of Walt Disney World in the diploma means students will analyse and evaluate the beginning and growth of a world renowned tourism company, and gain an understanding of the business operations including organisational structure, roles, and suppliers.

The New Zealand Tourism Industry

New Zealand is unique and offers a range of tourism products to different markets. This component looks at the interrelationships between attractions and activities, amenities and accessibility, and analyses both a tourist destination within New Zealand in terms of its strengths and weaknesses.

Conference and Events

This growing industry – conference and events comes to life as you look at how to determine client needs and analyse and evaluate different conference and event venues in terms of their unique offering and against a client brief.

Marketing a Tourism Attraction

What is involved in marketing a tourism attraction? Given the online presence every tourism attraction needs to have, what is the best way to market and promote an attraction?

Study Tour One – Hobbiton Movie Set Tours & Waitomo Adventures

Experience two New Zealand iconic tourism attractions in this North Island Study tour. Meet with management from both organisations and hear their stories about the challenges they have faced in keeping their business at the forefront of the industry. Both of these companies have highly trained guides which you will experience as part of this study tour and both companies offer a completely different tourism experience. On return you will complete a marketing plan for one of the businesses.

Accounting and Financial Statements

An important part of business is to be able to understand accounting and the impact this has on a business. This interesting module prepares you to be able to explain the nature of accounting and accounting concepts; explain and classify transactions according to their effect on the expanded accounting equation; and prepare financial statements for an entity as part of the business process of tourism.

Cruise Ship Tourism

The cruise ship industry is not just growing in New Zealand, but also worldwide. Learn about the development of this major industry, the profile of cruise passengers and discuss the perceived value of cruising for the customer and the destinations. This practical application will see you establish customer needs, compare cruise companies, and quote prices.

Human Resources

All successful tourism businesses understand the importance of having great people on the team. You will learn about the key elements that make up Human resources, from recruitment and induction through to appraisals and performance management. This module prepares you prior to your study tour will you will hear from the HR Manager of three major tourism companies.

Customer Service Sales Strategy

This module covers the importance of having a customer service strategy and how to develop one.

Study Tour Two – Queenstown

In Queenstown you will visit three major tourism companies, each offering a different experience for tourists. AJ Hackett will share what it is like to be a leading adventure tourism company and how they recruit, induct and train the hundreds of staff they employ. Real Journeys is an iconic Queenstown company and offers a large product range. Hear from their management team about their recruitment strategy across a large range of roles and locations. Skyline Skyrides will also share their customer service strategy and how they manage to stay focused on delivering an outstanding customer experience. On your return from Queenstown, you will be able to take the knowledge you have learnt to complete a Queenstown destination & human resources project based on the companies you have visited.

Workplace Practice

This is the final module for those not on an internship. It includes the following components:

  • Effective teamwork and managing conflict
  • Optional International Study Tour to a South Pacific Island
  • Industry familiarisation report
  • Presentation of a tourist destination
  • Preparation, participation and reflection on the job fair
  • Evaluate a tourism business and make recommendations for future growth
Internship opportunity

You will be presented with both domestic and international paid internship opportunities in the tourism industry. Internships are for 12 weeks minimum (nearly all are permanent positions) and replace the last 8 weeks of your Diploma. They are a great way to start your career.

Please note that internship and other work experience opportunities are subject to meeting attendance requirements and successful academic completion. In addition, acceptance into any of our courses does not guarantee acceptance into any internship opportunities. International internships such as Walt Disney, are only available to New Zealand Australian citizens. Interview criteria by each employer applies.

On return from Queenstown, you will be able to take the knowledge you have learnt to complete a Queenstown Destination & Human Resources project based on the companies you have visited.

International Internship Opportunities

We currently offer four international internships for students:

These international internships will be an impressive addition to your CV and may allow you to shorten your Diploma study in class to 24 weeks. These are available only to New Zealand or Australian citizens. Domestic internships are available for both domestic and international students.

International Study Tour

This is an optional extra for those Diploma students who wish to partake in an international study tour; visiting resorts and attractions either in Fiji, Australia, or other international destination. Experience international check-in, passport control, airport security and international flights as well as increasing your knowledge.

ENTRY CRITERIA

Year 1

At the start of the course applicants must:

  • have either NCEA Level 3, or University Entrance, or completed a Level 3 Certificate in Tourism or Travel or have equivalent knowledge and skills.

International Students

  • All international students must be a minimum of 18 years of age on day 1 of your course (as per code of practice requirements)
  • 4 years of secondary school or equivalent work experience
  • English Language Proficiency as outlined in the International pages on this website

Year 2

At start of Year 2 applicants must:

  • have fully completed Year 1 and have a qualification in travel or tourism Level 5
  • have achieved a high level of attendance in Year 1

Note: an entry assessment may be required at end of Year 1. This is to determine your ability to read and understand textbooks and ability to write an essay.

International Students

All international students must:

  • be a minimum of 18 years of age at the start of all courses.
  • completed Secondary School offshore or New Zealand Year 12 or equivalent work experience
  • have English language proficiency as outlined in the International pages on this website
4 week Flight Attending Practical's

Due to the limited number of spaces funded by the government, entry into this block course is by endorsement of the Campus Manager only. The Campus Manager will select which of the students that have applied will be confirmed in the programme around the week 10 mark of the Tourism, Airline & Flight Attending programme. Decisions will be made by looking at the criteria outlined in the student handbook for ‘all programmes’ as well as the student’s individual performance in the ‘Assessment Centre’ module of the Tourism, Airline and Flight Attending programme. Further criteria are as follows:
• Must have successfully completed the Tourism, Airline and Flight Attending Programme Level 4
• Must be able to gain a passport without restrictions
• Must be 18 four weeks after upon completion of the qualification
• Must be able to meet the security requirements for gaining an AVSEC card – this requires a police check and you may be ineligible if you have a criminal record.
Due to limited funding, preference may be given to those who are enrolled on the two year Aviation and Tourism management Programme.
